Lamp Shades and High End Design

So there are giant sized lamp shades hanging from the buildings on Rue du Mail for the celebration of Paris Deco Off! This event only comes once a year when top International designers show off their work, and as expected, everything was absolutely amazing. I think my biggest surprise though, was seeing the beautiful modern wallpaper!  If you're anything like me, it's a bit of a shock to think that something so hated 10 years ago is now making a comeback in the design world.   Unfortunately, I couldn't get any pictures of it, but trust me when I say that it's definitely something to consider for your future kitchen or bathroom walls!

Weekend Winter Wonderland

Its snowing!  Paris has been so beautiful this weekend with the first snowfall of the year!  I spent the weekend walking around Tracadero and Place de Concorde snapping pics and staying warm with cups of vin chaud in between.  I think I enjoy Paris more when its cold with snow than when its just cold...  the snow makes it 100 times more better!  We are in for more snow this week, so there will be more to come!

Tis the Season for La Galette des Rois!

La Galette des Rois

Optional trinkets for inside of the cake

So a couple of weeks ago I started to notice round flaky pastry things with paper crowns on top in EVERY single boulangerie window in Paris.  Some were maxi sized and others were petit.  I didn't think anything of it because 1. It's France, and 2. French people are really serious when it comes to having the right pastry at the right time of year.
But to my surprise, a coworker explained to me that during the month of January French people celebrate the season of La Galette des Rois (which literally means The Kings Cake)!  And to my even bigger surprise, there are small trinkets inside of each cake and whoever eats the piece with one of the trinkets inside is king and gets to wear the paper crown!... Ok, the connection is starting to make sense now, right?  Well, the connection with the cake and crown makes sense but I was told that there is a deeper tradition in that La Galette des Rois celebrates Epiphany and the three kings, but I obviously won't get into that now.
Fortunately for me though, I did have the opportunity to partake in the eating part with my coworkers and taste this perfectly flaky almond filled dessert with a glass of champagne on the side.  Unfortunately though, I do have to report that I didn't get the piece with the trinket inside and I wasn't able wear the paper crown, but there are still a couple of weeks left in January so I will have plenty of time to try my luck again!
If you are in France during the month of January you should definitely take the opportunity to try one! Happy Thursday!

Just a Little Sunshine

Rue Montorgueil

Just a quick post on how beautiful (but cold) the weather is in Paris today.  It has been snowing/raining/sleeting the past few days but today the sun decided to come out and SHINE!  Even though its freezing cold, I think everyone is like me and wants to soak up as much sunshine as possible!  Happy Hump Day!    More soon!

Paris in Motion/Mayeul Akpovi

Paris In Motion (Part II) from Mayeul Akpovi on Vimeo.

Hey everyone, so I thought I'd share with you all a video that a friend sent to me a few days ago from ArchDaily showcasing the work of Mayeul Akpovi.  The video highlights all of the beautiful places in Paris (which is pretty much everywhere) and Akpovi does an excellent job at showing them by day and by night.  I've watched this video a few times now, and every time I see it I can't help but think about how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful city.  I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do and if you want to know more about Mayeul Akpovi there's a link to his Facebook page below!

"Mayeul Akpovi shared with us a time lapse video he made, which goes through a sequence of experiences and places, highlighting the day and night life of the big city. ‘ in Motion’ includes about 3500 photos as he successfully creates a video, accompanied by music, which draws you in and fast forwards through time."

The Soldes are Here!!!

Hartford - Rue d'Aboukir

The soldes (sales) are here and this has to be one of my favorite times in Paris!  They only happen twice a year (january and July) and last for about three weeks with discounts up to 70% off (which you can't beat in Paris).  Unfortunately last year I was too slow and waited to the end to buy stuff, but this year I have learned my lesson and I am on it!  So far I've been able to pick up a couple of things around Etienne Marcel and Place de Victoire without the crowds being too bad, but I'm already preparing myself for the weekend when everybody and their mother take to the streets! If you're in Paris you should definitely check them out!  Happy shopping!

Perspectin' Paris

Palais Royal Hallwalk

Abbesses Hills

La Poste

Passage Vero Dodat

I was once told by someone that I like playing with perspectives... annnd I guess they were right.  Paris is such a fun place to try this and I have had the best time snapping away in the most random places. As you can see, one of these shots was just me walking along a hallwalk (if that's even a word) at Palais Royal. It shots like these that I find most appealing to the eye and makes ANY setting look interesting!  More soon!

Galerie Vivienne

Galerie Vivienne

The lights are still shining at Galerie Vivienne!  I was able to spend my lunch break roaming around this beautiful Galerie with fancy shops and cafes.  It's a real treat working close to an area that has so much to offer.  If I get a moment one day, Ill have to stop in to this cafe and try un café  avec du sucre!

Meet me by the Steps of the Sacre-Coeur

Paris View

Just by the Steps of the Sacre-Coeur

Rue Lamarck
I spent this grey afternoon walking around my old neighborhood (Montmartre) snapping photos.  It's something about this place that I will always love... maybe the cafes or the super high steps, or just the place where I first arrived and lived in Paris.  I have some of the best memories here and I'm 200% sure that it will be my home again soon!  More soon.

Kick Start

Just me in Neuil Les Aubiers

So welcome to my new blog!  I started another blog back in 2011 when I first moved to Paris to just keep a journal, but as my life took off, I stopped blogging.  Now that everything is in order (work, school, social life etc) I will keep this updated on a regular basis.  Paris has been a wonderful experience and I'm excited to share it all with you!  Please feel free to comment and share your thoughts
